About the Owner

Ellen Rohr has been researching her personal genealogy since she was a child. As everyone does, she made her first family tree as a school project. Then when she was a little older, her great uncle, Herbert Blum, published a book on the Blum, Carstens and Wenholz familes. After reading it, she became fascinated with genealogy and family history. Her search began documenting and researching her mother's paternal lineage and her father's lineage.

She electronically organized her family tree as early as the mid 80s. As a mother of three, her she did what research she could from her home, limited by distance for most of her family tree.

About 10 years later she discovered the internet, and the depth of information and clues available there. Thanks to Shari Milks, webmaster of the Manitowoc County genealogy website, she was able to fill in a lot of the holes in her tree and eventually made her own personal website. Realizing where the internet was headed, she removed her personal website in the late 90s, attempting to respect her family's personal privacy.

In 1996, she became a transcription assistant for Shari Milks on the Manitowoc Genealogy website (www.2manitowoc.com). She worked at that nightly for several years, when she decided to take on a local project, volunteering for the USGenWeb Waukesha County Wisconsin Project with another webmaster. After several months, she took on the project herself. Then in Summer 2001 she expanded her research and transcription to include Milwaukee County, WI. Both sites can be found at www.LinksToThePast.com

In 2001, she took on a project for an eldery woman wishing to preserve her family history while she could. She set up a very basic personal website for the ladies family genealogy. It eventually expanded to a very large personal website. In August 2002, she helped a friend, Joan Benner, setup her website for her professional genealogy service. In August 2003, she expanded her available free resources to include all of Wisconsin at www.WIRoots.org.

Through the years, she has answered many inquiries. Frequently answering questions like, "How do I order a birth certificate?" to "I am stuck, help!" Due to time constraints, raising her family, she was unable to offer a lot personal research until now.
