  	George Barthels Sr., 86, of Mishicot, widely known retired Town of Mishicot farmer, died at his home Monday night. He had been in failing health the past year. Funeral services will be at 2 pm Thursday at St. Peter Evangelical Lutheran Church, Mishicot, the Rev. David Worgull officiating. Burial will be in Mishicot Public Cemetery. Mr. Barthels was born in 1874 in the Town of Mishicot, son of the late William and Sophia Schriever Barthels. He married the former Louise Wolters at Manitowoc May 25, 1909, after which the couple settled on the Barthels homestead farm. They retired 15 years ago, turning over the operation of the farm to a son, Oscar. Ten years ago the couple moved to a home in the village. The couple observed its golden wedding anniversary last year. Prominent in affairs of St. Peter church for many years, he served for a long period as a member of the board of trustees and was chairman of the building committee when the present church was erected. A director for many years of the old Mishicot State Bank, Mr. Barthels was also a director of the former Two Rivers Equity Exchange, now the Twin Rivers Cooperative. He served for many years as treasurer of the board of Jefferson District School No. 2 in the Town of Mishicot. Besides his wife, he leaves a daughter, Mrs. Norman Lorenz of Mishicot; another son, the Rev. George Barthels of Red Wing, Minn., and 17 grandchildren. Friends may call at Specht Funeral Home, Mishicot, after 2 pm Wednesday until 11 am Thursday when the casket will be taken to the church where the body will lie in state until the time of service.
